Mining Helium with Cellular Networks: A Comprehensive Guide

📜 Introduction

Recently, I wrote an article on mining Helium via cellular networks, specifically using the ZBT WE826-T2 4G LTE router. Many people have wondered why one would opt for cellular networks for this process. If you're unsure, refer back to my previous article, where I explain the motivations and complexities of using cellular connections for Helium mining.

If you’ve already tried and hit a roadblock, keep reading!

🛠 Addressing Connection Issues

After releasing the original guide, I received numerous inquiries about difficulties connecting the WE826-T2 router to WireGuard VPN. Despite my previous success, replicating the setup proved unexpectedly difficult. After days of troubleshooting and consulting ZBT’s support, I decided to switch to a more reliable model — the ZBT WG1608.

Through testing, I found the WE826-T2’s WireGuard support limited and underdeveloped, requiring manual installations and updates. While some users had success with OpenVPN, I opted to move forward with the WG1608 for its superior WireGuard compatibility and seamless user experience.

💼 Conclusion?

Within an hour of setting up the ZBT WG1608, I successfully connected my Helium miner via cellular connection. The WG1608’s user-friendly interface and ZBT’s responsive support team proved invaluable. If you’re struggling with the WE826-T2, consider upgrading to the WG1608 for smoother integration.

✨ Updated Guide for ZBT WG1608 Setup

🖥 Part 1: Setting Up the VPS and WireGuard Server

The process for setting up the VPS and WireGuard server remains unchanged from my previous guide. Refer back to those steps to configure the necessary environment.

🛑 Prerequisites

Ensure that you have:
- An IPv4 address for your server
- A functioning WireGuard setup on your VPS
- Public/private key pairs for both your VPS and router
- Your ZBT WG1608 router ready to configure

📟 Part 2: Configuring the ZBT WG1608 Router

Begin by inserting your SIM card into the WG1608 and attaching all antennas. Power on the router, and after a minute, it should appear in your Wi-Fi network list.

Access the admin panel by visiting 192.168.1.1 in your browser. After selecting your language and setting an admin password, you’ll find yourself in the router’s sleek, intuitive interface.

📡 Setting Up the VPN

Navigate to “VPN” > “WireGuard Client,” and add a new profile. Input the necessary details, including the keys generated earlier.

Once connected, a green indicator will confirm that your WireGuard VPN is active. If you see a yellow light, revisit the troubleshooting steps from my earlier guide.

🎈 Configuring for Helium Mining

Now, power up your Helium miner and connect it to the WG1608 via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. In the admin panel’s “Clients” section, find the miner’s MAC address and assign a static IP to ensure consistent port forwarding.

🧱 Firewall and Port Forwarding
In the “Firewall” section, create a new rule to forward port 44158 to the static IP you just assigned. This ensures the miner stays connected without interruptions.

📟 Monitoring the Miner and Router Remotely
One of the key advantages of using WireGuard with the ZBT WG1608 is the ability to securely monitor your Helium miner and router remotely. Set up port forwarding for your router, and with a secure SSH tunnel, you’ll have full access to the router and miner for diagnostics and configuration.
