Setting Up Fiber Optic Internet with ZBT-AX1800 OpenWrt Router

As more households and businesses switch to fiber-optic internet for faster speeds and lower latency, the question of whether to use the provider’s default router or your own becomes crucial. Many users opt for their own routers to avoid rental fees and gain better control over privacy and customization. For those who prefer a more versatile and secure option, the **ZBT-AX1800** running OpenWrt is an excellent choice for integrating with fiber-optic services like CenturyLink.

The Role of the ONT in Fiber Connections

When your fiber-optic service is set up, your provider will install an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This device is essential for converting fiber signals into Ethernet, enabling you to connect your router. While providers typically bundle a router with the ONT, many charge rental fees. By using your own ZBT-AX1800, you gain greater control over your network and avoid additional monthly fees.

Securing Your PPPoE Credentials

During installation, make sure to ask your technician for your PPPoE username and password. These credentials are necessary for authenticating your connection through the router. The format of your username is typically something like “username@centurylink.com,” and your password is auto-generated. Once you have this information, you’re ready to begin the setup process.

Step 1: Setting Up ZBT-AX1800 and Installing LuCi

To get started, plug the fiber internet cable into the WAN port of your ZBT-AX1800. After powering it on, access the admin panel via the default LAN IP address (192.168.8.1). Navigate to the MORE SETTINGS > Advanced section to install LuCi, the user-friendly interface for OpenWrt. Once installed, you can log into LuCi at 192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci.

Step 2: Configuring VLAN Tagging on WAN

To make the ZBT-AX1800 compatible with fiber-optic internet, you need to configure VLAN tagging. For example, CenturyLink uses VLAN ID 201. Head to Network > Interface > WAN, select “Edit,” and configure the PPPoE protocol. Input your PPPoE username and password, then click “Save & Apply.”

Next, go to the Physical Settings tab and find the “Custom Interface” option. Input the VLAN ID as “eth0.xx” where “xx” is the VLAN ID used by your ISP (e.g., “eth0.201” for CenturyLink). After saving and applying these settings, a router reboot may be required for the changes to take effect.

By using the ZBT-AX1800 with OpenWrt, you can leverage a more secure, customizable networking experience while saving on unnecessary rental fees.
