We extend our thanks to @Gabriel Custodiet for interviewing Jianbin Zhao, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of ZBT Router Factory, on the Watchman Privacy Podcast.
In the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered workplace dynamics, propelling a widespread adoption of remote work to reduce transmission risks. What began as a necessity has since become the preferred working arrangement for many companies.
However, this shift introduces significant network security risks, as remote employees often connect to unsecured public Wi-Fi networks in cafes or hotels. ZBT provides an efficient solution for small and medium-sized enterprises by equipping remote workers with VPN-enabled travel routers, enabling businesses to monitor network traffic while protecting their employees’ digital assets and online footprints.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to developing innovative solutions that enhance both business operations and personal lifestyles across the globe.

Key Podcast Insights on Network Security and Future Solutions
Success with Slate: A Milestone in Portable Routers
Our first significant success was the Slate router in 2018, which garnered multiple awards and continues to be a strong seller. It amazed users with its compact size, ability to run VPNs seamlessly, and USB-powered design. Reflecting on its success, it was our first Gigabit travel router—small, portable, and equipped with three Gigabit Ethernet ports, exceeding many users' expectations.
Evolving Designs: From Slate to Slate AX
Since 2018, we have developed successors to the Slate, including the Slate AX. As users demanded more powerful devices, we opted for larger routers to house new chipsets and maintain adequate cooling. Despite the larger size, the Slate AX remains compact compared to other AX routers in the mass market, providing unmatched performance.
Adopting OpenWrt: Customizations and Source Code
We built our user interface on OpenWrt, a trusted open-source platform for routers. This allows users to bypass complex setups and focus on their applications. OpenWrt also gives users control over firmware changes, enabling them to work independently from the manufacturer, which is why we continue to build on this robust system.
VPN Features: The Basics of OpenVPN and WireGuard
We offer two options for VPN protocols: OpenVPN and WireGuard. OpenVPN is widely supported and versatile, while WireGuard is lighter and faster but not yet fully supported by all service providers. The choice between the two depends on the user's application, with both providing reliable privacy solutions.
Protecting Privacy: Mac Address and Public Wi-Fi
When users connect to public Wi-Fi, their devices are often identified by their MAC addresses, leaving traces of their activity. By funneling traffic through a ZBT travel router, users can secure their devices’ MAC addresses and even use randomized ones, thereby enhancing privacy and limiting tracking.
Advanced VPN Policies and Setup
The VPN policies we previously implemented have been streamlined into a more user-friendly dashboard, offering global proxy options, MAC address-based configurations, and domain name filtering. Users can fully customize their VPN setup based on their specific needs.
Slate AX and Wi-Fi 6: A New Standard in Performance
The Slate AX is our first Wi-Fi 6 router, delivering up to 10 times faster VPN speeds compared to earlier versions. This cutting-edge device is a major step forward in our pursuit of high-performance networking solutions.
AdGuard and IP Masquerading: Enhancing Security
AdGuard Home, which blocks unwanted ads and tracking, has been integrated into our routers, offering automatic protection for all connected devices without additional configuration. Additionally, **IP Masquerading**, a form of NAT, is essential for securing connections, especially in site-to-site VPN setups.
Future-Proof Features: GoodCloud, Dynamic DNS, and Network Storage
We’ve integrated features like GoodCloud for remote router management, Dynamic DNS (DDNS) with IPv6 support, and Network Storage capabilities. These advanced features transform our routers from basic network devices into versatile, personal network hubs.
Continued Support for Legacy Devices
We remain committed to supporting our entire range of routers, including older models, until they reach their official end-of-life (EOL). Even after EOL announcements, we will provide firmware updates for two more years, ensuring our customers continue to receive optimal service.
Privacy and Data Protection: A Core Focus
At ZBT, privacy is paramount. Our routers do not require registration, and users can operate them anonymously without needing cloud services or smartphone apps. This ensures that our customers maintain complete control over their personal data and privacy.
Technological Edge: What Sets ZBT Apart
Three key factors distinguish our award-winning routers:
1. Open Source Commitment – By building on OpenWrt, we offer users transparency and trust.
2. User-Friendly Interface – Our intuitive UI simplifies complex configurations, making it easy for users to set up and manage routers.
3. Data Leak Prevention – We prioritize security through robust VPN support, routing policies, firewalls, and encrypted DNS to safeguard user data.
The demand for travel routers may have started with a small group of privacy-conscious users, but it has grown into a thriving business. ZBT is proud to lead the way in secure, portable networking solutions.
