Question: How many wireless devices can one ZBT mini router handle?
Answer: The number of devices a ZBT mini router can manage depends on the encryption method in use. In our tests with PSK2 encryption, we successfully connected 39 devices to the router. When 15 devices were streaming YouTube videos, the router maintained performance. However, with 25 devices streaming, some experienced delays. Performance is consistent across our various models.
For optimal performance, we recommend connecting up to 15 devices.
Test Methodology:
Our tests were conducted at the Mobile Devices Testing Corner of the Hong Kong Science Park. We assessed the connection capacity of ZBT mini routers (AR150, MT300N, MT300A, AR300M, MiFi) using diverse mobile devices including Samsung, HTC, iPhone, iPad, Nokia, Sony, and Xiaomi. Due to the absence of cables in the testing lab, an AR150 router was used as a repeater to provide a wired network for the router under test. The repeater offered a limited 4Mbps Internet connection.
Test Environment:
- Internet Speed: WISP, 4Mbps.
- Devices: 39 mobile devices of various brands and models.
- Routers Tested: AR150, MT300N, MT300A, AR300M, MiFi.
- Encryption: PSK2.
- Distance: Devices were placed around the mini routers due to space constraints.
During the test, we ran the YouTube app on 25 devices and browsed web pages on others. We monitored system load using Luci.
Results:
All five ZBT router models (AR150, MT300N, MT300A, AR300M, MiFi) could connect to at least 39 devices simultaneously without issues. When streaming YouTube on 25 devices, around 15 devices played videos smoothly while 10 experienced buffering. Browser performance was acceptable, though slightly delayed due to video streaming load.
The 4Mbps Internet speed was a limiting factor. We observed the system load reaching 1, indicating the router's CPU was nearing its capacity.
Conclusion:
ZBT mini routers can connect to at least 39 devices using PSK2 encryption, and even more with no encryption. They can handle YouTube streaming on approximately 15 devices simultaneously. Video streaming is cached, so not all devices download data simultaneously, mimicking real-world usage scenarios.
